    The Coffee

    The Coffee

Jhon Esmith Orando is one of this years exceptional lots, selected from Raw Materials CIC, who operate with a high focus on margins for coffee farmers where it matters most.

It was purchased in a small volume of Vac Pacs to preserve its unique and very intense characteristics that make it a very special coffee.

The process is natural, but it's not overly fermented. It's got amazing clarity in the cup, with a strong taste of fresh green apples, supported by a layer elderflower sweetness and crisp, malic acidity, all held together by a dry Riesling body.

Overall this coffee is very refreshing and almost effervescent to drink, with great balance and clarity that it very unique. It shines as a pour over.

The variety is 'Ombligon', which translates from Spanish to English as “belly button” due to its unique shape. Ombligon has similar characteristics to Caturra, such as wide leaves, cherries which grow close together, branches which grow vertically, and high yields.

It's is through that Ombligon could be a natural mutation of other varieties like Pacamara, Bourbon, or even Castillo. Producers in Huila, Colombia grow Ombligon at different altitudes, but between 1,600 and 1,800 m.a.s.l. tends to work best.

    The Farmer

    The Farmer

Jhon Esmith Orando is a young producer from Pitalito, Huila. His farm, Casa Roja, is located in the municipality of Palestine, approximately 1 hour away from the town of Pitalito. Alongside Casa Roja, Jhon owns another farm in the municipality of Bruselas, both farms are managed by him and his family.

It is only recently that John started working with Raw Material and Invercafe, with the delivery of their cherries from Pitalito to Jamaica in Chinchina, where they are able to fully control the processing of lots to maximise the quality they can achieve.

The result being an exceptional product that will make for a memorable coffee.

    • Wholesale

We are always looking to work with likeminded businesses to serve our coffee.

If you're interested in serving this locally roasted Edinburgh coffee as your main offering, a guest appearance or as bags of retail, get in touch with us on roastery@machina-coffee.co.uk or call (0131) 656 9565.

    • Roasting Schedule

Your coffee will be roasted within 1-16 days of purchase, with a shelf life of 6 weeks (optimum serving point at 12-36 days old). We recommend letting this coffee rest for at least 12 days before using, in order to release excess gas which can impact the flavour of your cup.

If you would like your coffee fresh, please leave a note with your order and we will do our best to accommodate.
