Iriguini is the first of our new season (2021) crop Kenyan's, and it's one that we are very pleased to get our hands on.

It comes from the same group of farms as some of our previous Kenyan's such as last years Kangiri AA, which was considered to be a bit of a classic Kenyan by many - clean, rich profiles with great clarity and up front acidity.

Iriguini is a fantastic tasting example of high quality washed Kenyan coffee. In the cup expect a rich cherry fruit flavour, joined by a fig like body alongside a syrupy muscovado like sweetness. It's an intense coffee, with an upfront acidity.

Tasting notes:

How you can brew this coffee:
V60, Chemex, Kalita, Syphon, Cafetiere, Aeropress and Drip Machine (Moccamaster, Wilfa Classic etc).

The farmers:

The Marumi Farmers Cooperative Society was created in 1980, working with around 1500 small holder farmers. The Coop comprises of three factories, Marumi, Iriguini, and Mariira.

This coffee has come from Iriguini which means “the place of bananas” in the local Kikuyu language and refers to the numerous banana and plantain trees. They represent around 500 smallholders who grow coffee on about 400 hectares delivering approximately 145mt of coffee cherries annually.

The washing station:

Founded in 1988, the Iriguini washing station sits at 1,800 MASL, with water for fermentation and washing being pumped from the Icharuhonge river 250 meters below to the factory, so water recycling is a key focus in processing.

Farmers deliver coffee on motorbike, car and on their backs. Despite all this work and the very small farm sizes of the members, they produce 145 metric tonnes of coffee aper year.

Growing conditions:

On the eastern slopes of the Aberdare Range, the farmers benefit from very rich volcanic soil and high altitude - perfect for the cultivation of coffee.

On the cultivation side, the limited rainfalls slow the maturing process of the cherries, which combined with the high altitude results in complex and sweet cup profiles.

Iriguini is a settlement in the Muranga County in Kenya's Central Province. It's around 35 miles north of Nairobi, and is positioned between the Nyeri & Thika.
