    The Coffee

    The Coffee

This coffee was grown by Luis Anibal Calderon at the farm Villa Betulia. After being carefully hand-picked and sorted to remove any defects, the coffee was sun-dried on raised beds until the ideal moisture content was achieved.

This microlot is 100% Caturron, a rare mutation of Caturra found for the first time in Acevedo, Huila. Growers started planting Caturron due to its resistance to leaf rust and high yield, but it wasn't until 2016 when Cofinet, with the help of some growers from the region, identified the exotic cup profile of this varietal.

This coffee brilliantly showcases the expertise in growing and processing. Once brewed, the enticing aroma of fresh strawberries immediately captivates your senses. With your first sip, these strawberry notes gracefully evolve into vibrant citrus notes of calamansi.

Throughout the experience, hints of elderflower subtly weave their way through the flavour profile, becoming more pronounced towards the end and leaving a delightful floral finish.

    The Farmers / Co-Op

    The Farmers / Co-Op

Cofinet have called Luis Aníbal Calderón one of the finest producers they work with. Luis is a 2nd generation coffee farmer and has been working in this field for over 40 years now. But it hasn’t always been plane sailing for Luis.

In 2011, he faced the threat of losing his farm due to financial struggles from selling coffee on the C-market, which barely covered production costs. Seeking help, Luis approached his local Specialty Coffee Association, which offered a 15% premium above the C-price. This support, though modest, enabled him to sustain his farm and explore specialty coffee production.

In 2012, Luis planted 5,000 Gesha trees, and after three challenging years, he was convinced of the potential in specialty coffee. By 2015, he aimed to transform his entire farm to focus on exotic varieties. Today, his farm, Finca Villa Betulia in Acevedo, Huila, is a leader in specialty coffee, growing diverse and exotic types such as Red Gesha, Tabi, Java, and Pink Bourbon, among many others.

With Cofinet's assistance, Luis has honed his processing techniques for high-end micro-lots and is now proficient in methods like Extended Fermentation, Honeys, and Naturals, solidifying his reputation as a master coffee producer.
