    The Coffee

    The Coffee

Kelloo Uraga Layio is one of the most outstanding Ethiopian's of the year, sourced through our premium partners Nordic Approach. In fact this is the lot they personally selected as their favourite of the year.

We chose five Ethiopian's this year (which is very rare), demonstrating just how high quality this seasons Ethiopian lots were from the 2023 crops, with Kelloo being one of the strongest 'type 1' coffees we selected.

Type 1 lots are typically more traditional coffees with amazing definition / structure, holding almost tea like qualities and less intense / tropical / fruity notes.

Kelloo Uraga Layio is light and delicate, its mellow tea-like body is punctuated with heady perfumes. It’s very floral and delicately sweet, making it a superb representation of a washed Ethiopian profile.

    The Farmer

    The Farmer

Layio is a washing station in Uraga, Guji. Sitting atop a small hill bathed in sunlight and cold winds, around 600 producers deliver cherries here from neighbouring farms.

This specific lot comes from those with high-yield farms, thanks to their rich, red and fertile soil, growing on around 0.5-2 hectares and using high standard farming practices to bolster the quality in the cup.

It’s only been possible to buy Ethiopian lots specifically (and traceably) from Uraga since 2017 when the ECX relaxed its regulations, allowing smaller regions such as this to sell coffee as a differentiated profile.

Previously coffees grown in this area could only be classified at a regional level, that being Guji. This is pretty exciting, as it means new and distinct flavour profiles are emerging from Ethiopia, and their popularity has led to more investment, new washing stations and better options for producers.

    • Wholesale

We are always looking to work with likeminded businesses to serve our coffee.

If you're interested in serving this locally roasted Edinburgh coffee as your main offering, a guest appearance or as bags of retail, get in touch with us on roastery@machina-coffee.co.uk or call (0131) 656 9565.

    • Roasting Schedule

Your coffee will be roasted within 1-16 days of purchase, with a shelf life of 6 weeks (optimum serving point at 12-36 days old). We recommend letting this coffee rest for at least 12 days before using, in order to release excess gas which can impact the flavour of your cup.

If you would like your coffee fresh, please leave a note with your order and we will do our best to accommodate.
